About the Department
The Department of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Engineering is one of Iraq’s most forward-looking engineering programmes, dedicated to the design, development, and operation of unmanned aerial vehicles and autonomous systems. It is one of the few departments in the region offering a specialised undergraduate degree in this rapidly growing field.
Students study aerodynamics, avionics, flight control systems, mission planning, autonomous navigation, and UAS regulations β gaining a comprehensive understanding of both the engineering and operational dimensions of unmanned aerial systems.
The department serves defence, agriculture, infrastructure inspection, surveying, and emergency response sectors β all of which are rapidly adopting UAS technology across Iraq and the wider region.
Vision & Mission
Vision
To be a regionally recognised centre of excellence in unmanned aircraft systems engineering β producing pioneers who design, operate, and advance autonomous aerial technologies for peaceful, productive, and responsible applications.
Mission
To deliver a specialised, practice-oriented UAS engineering education that combines aeronautical foundations with cutting-edge autonomy, avionics, and systems integration β preparing graduates to lead Iraq's growing unmanned systems industry.
Objectives & Goals
- βDevelop graduates with strong aerodynamic, structural, and propulsion knowledge specific to unmanned aircraft.
- βTrain students in avionics systems, flight control algorithms, and autopilot design and integration.
- βEquip graduates with autonomous navigation, path planning, and computer vision for UAS applications.
- βDevelop proficiency in ground control station operation, mission planning, and UAS airspace management.
- βFoster research into fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and hybrid UAS platforms for diverse mission profiles.
- βBuild awareness of UAS regulations, airspace integration policies, and ethical use of autonomous systems.
- βEncourage interdisciplinary collaboration with AI, cybersecurity, and communication engineering departments.
- βDevelop hands-on skills through flight simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and outdoor flight operations.

A Message from the Head of Department
Unmanned aerial systems are transforming industries from agriculture and infrastructure to emergency response and environmental monitoring. Our department was established with a clear vision: to prepare Iraq’s next generation of engineers to lead in this transformative field, not merely follow it. Our students build, programme, and fly real systems as part of their training β because in UAS engineering, there is no substitute for hands-on experience. I am excited by the opportunities that await our graduates.
