Civil Engineering

Building the infrastructure that connects, shelters, and sustains Iraq — from bridges to water systems.

About the Department

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the foundational pillars of the College of Engineering at Al-Farabi University. It prepares graduates to design, build, and maintain the physical infrastructure that modern societies depend on — roads, bridges, dams, water systems, and buildings.

The curriculum spans structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, transportation engineering, and environmental engineering, giving students a broad and deep foundation for professional practice or advanced research.

With close ties to Iraq’s public sector infrastructure bodies and leading construction firms, the department ensures its graduates are ready to contribute immediately to the nation’s ongoing development.

Vision & Mission

🔭

Vision

To be a nationally recognised department of excellence in civil engineering education and research — developing graduates who design and build safe, sustainable, and innovative infrastructure that supports Iraq's long-term development.

🎯

Mission

To deliver a comprehensive, practice-led civil engineering education grounded in strong analytical foundations, hands-on laboratory experience, and industry engagement — producing graduates who apply engineering judgement responsibly to solve Iraq's infrastructure challenges.

Objectives & Goals

  • Provide rigorous training in structural analysis, design, and the behaviour of materials under load.
  • Develop graduates competent in geotechnical investigation, foundation design, and soil mechanics.
  • Equip students with hydraulic and hydrological analysis skills for water resource and drainage projects.
  • Integrate sustainable construction principles, green materials, and life-cycle thinking into the curriculum.
  • Build strong partnerships with government ministries and private contractors for site visits and internships.
  • Foster research into Iraq-specific challenges: arid-climate construction, seismic risk, and flood management.
  • Develop proficiency in industry-standard software: SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and GIS tools.
  • Promote professional ethics, safety culture, and awareness of codes and standards in engineering practice.

A Message from the Head of Department

Civil engineering is the backbone of every functioning society. Our graduates go on to design the bridges that connect communities, the water networks that sustain life, and the structures that house Iraq’s growing population. The department is committed to producing engineers who combine rigorous technical skill with a deep sense of responsibility to the communities they serve. I invite you to join a department that is proud of both its legacy and its ambition.
