Petroleum Engineering
Unlocking Iraq's underground wealth through engineering excellence
Engineering Iraq's Most Vital Industry
The Department of Petroleum Engineering prepares students for careers in one of Iraq's most economically critical industries. The programme covers the full life cycle of oil and gas development — from geological exploration and well drilling through to reservoir management and production optimisation — equipping graduates to contribute to Iraq's energy sector from day one.
With Iraq holding some of the world's largest proven oil reserves, the demand for highly trained petroleum engineers is immense. Our graduates are equipped with the technical skills and industry awareness to play a meaningful role in the responsible development of these resources.
Vision & Mission
👁️ Vision
The department is staffed by qualified faculty members holding PhD and Master's degrees in Petroleum Engineering. Over the past years, they have graduated hundreds of engineers who now serve in technical and academic positions across government institutions, the private sector, and both inside and outside Iraq.
🎯 Mission
the department has taken practical steps to build strong partnerships with leading international oil companies, across various fields of petroleum engineering.
Department Goals
Objectives:
Prepare highly qualified petroleum engineers to work across all sectors of the oil and gas industry.
Support the educational process in line with international accreditation standards to achieve the department’s vision and mission.
Enhance faculty capabilities and attract distinguished expertise to the department.
Conduct rigorous applied research that generates new knowledge for use in local and international markets.
Promote scientific collaboration, exchange, and partnership agreements with peer departments and knowledge institutions in advanced countries.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
- PEO 1: Graduates will successfully apply petroleum engineering principles and modern engineering tools to solve complex technical problems and contribute effectively to the oil and gas industry.
- PEO 2: Graduates will demonstrate professionalism, ethical responsibility, effective communication, leadership, and teamwork in multidisciplinary and multicultural work environments.
- PEO 3: Graduates will pursue lifelong learning, professional development, postgraduate studies, and continuous adaptation to emerging technologies and industry advancements.
- PEO 4: Graduates will contribute to innovation, applied research, and sustainable engineering practices while considering environmental protection, safety, and societal needs.
A Message from Our Head
"Iraq's petroleum resources are among the most significant in the world, and our graduates will play a vital role in their responsible development. Our department equips every student with the technical foundation to contribute meaningfully to the energy industry — and the professional values to do so sustainably."
