About the Department
The Department of Petroleum Engineering sits at the heart of Iraq’s most vital industry. As one of the world’s largest oil-producing nations, Iraq depends on highly skilled petroleum engineers to responsibly explore, extract, and manage its vast hydrocarbon reserves.
The department offers a rigorous curriculum covering reservoir engineering, drilling technology, well completion, production optimisation, and petroleum economics β equipping graduates with the skills demanded by major national and international oil companies operating in Iraq.
Strong industry partnerships with the Ministry of Oil, South Oil Company, and international operators give students direct exposure to field operations, advanced simulation tools, and real-world engineering challenges.
Vision & Mission
Vision
To be a leading petroleum engineering department in the Arab world β producing technically excellent, ethically grounded engineers who advance Iraq's energy sector while promoting responsible and sustainable resource management.
Mission
To provide a world-class petroleum engineering education that combines rigorous fundamentals with hands-on training, industry collaboration, and research β preparing graduates to drive safe, efficient, and sustainable hydrocarbon production for Iraq's long-term energy security.
Objectives & Goals
- βDeliver comprehensive training in reservoir characterisation, fluid mechanics, and production engineering.
- βDevelop graduates proficient in drilling engineering, well design, and completion technologies.
- βEquip students with reservoir simulation and modelling skills using industry-standard software.
- βFoster research into enhanced oil recovery, field redevelopment, and unconventional resources.
- βBuild strong partnerships with the Ministry of Oil and major operators for internships and field visits.
- βIntegrate petroleum economics, project evaluation, and HSE principles across the curriculum.
- βPromote sustainable practices in oilfield operations and responsible environmental stewardship.
- βPrepare graduates for professional certification and careers in national and international energy companies.
Prof. [Head Name]
Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department
A Message from the Head of Department
Iraq holds some of the largest proven oil reserves on the planet, and the engineers we produce here will be responsible for managing that extraordinary national asset. Our department combines deep theoretical foundations with practical, field-oriented training β because petroleum engineering is ultimately learned at the wellhead as much as in the lecture hall. I am proud of our graduates’ record across Iraq’s oil sector, and I look forward to the next generation building on that legacy.
